Home Security Installation

A wide range of security systems are available to help protect a home from burglars. Of these, a wireless system is simpler to install because it does not require professional assistance. It eliminates the wiring hassle that otherwise will involve wall panel removal and a certain level of electrical knowledge. This kind of system is also typically cheaper to buy and maintain. Since it does not need extensive wiring and drilling, a wireless system is easily removed and reinstalled when you plan to move into a new home.

Instructions

    • 1

Make a list of how many sensors you need based on the number of windows and exterior doors in your house. This will help you determine which the size and type of home security system that is best for your home.

    • 2

Decide where to install the security control panel. Ideally, it should be located next to the entry door that you use most often. The control panel also needs to be near an electrical outlet that is not "switch-controlled" or "timer-controlled."

    • 3

Select the best locations for the motion detectors, if these are included in the kit, and also the siren device. The best locations for motion sensors are near the ceilings or up high at wall corners. Choose a spot for the siren device on the inside of your house where the sound will not be muffled. The locations should also be not visible from outside the house.

    • 4

Read the home security system manual to ensure proper installation.

    • 5

Attach the control panel to the wall using the supplied screws. The unit should be at the height where it is easy to reach the keypad and read the display .

    • 6

Run the system power supply cord to the nearest wall outlet and plug it in. Many systems have built-in backup batteries in case of power outage or when the system is unplugged.

    • 7

Mount the sensing devices to the select windows and doors using double-sided adhesive tape, or whatever mounting material or hardware the manufacturer supplies. The sensor is composed of a small magnetized unit that has a tiny transmitter attached to it. Attach the magnet to the window or the door edge, and mount the transmitter directly across from the magnet on the window or door frame. The magnet should closely align with the transmitter when the door or window is closed.

    • 8

Place the motion detectors so they point at the most frequently trafficked areas in your home, such as hallways.

    • 9

Install the siren to a wall using the supplied screws. Your siren may be battery powered. If not, select a location near a wall outlet.

    • 10

Use the keypad on the control panel to set the features of your home security system. Most systems will include worksheets to help you program the unit.

    • 11

Test the home security system by pressing the "Test Mode" button on the control panel. Test each door and window that has a sensor installed. Test the system once every month to ensure it is working properly.
