DIY Wireless Alarm Systems That Will Cover the House & the Garage

A wireless alarm system relies on a wireless network, not wires, to connect sensors mounted on entrance ways leading into the home. To protect both the home and the garage, employ a series of sensors that can be attached to doors and windows. A sensor-activated wireless alarm system can be acquired from select hobby shops and some home and garden supply stores. Household tools will be needed to install the sensors, but neither mechanical or electrical skills are necessary to set up your do-it-yourself wireless alarm system.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide on the windows that will be protected by the wireless alarm system; these windows should be those that can be entered from the outside, for example, a window leading to the backyard or a window facing the front yard on the first floor.

Remove the paper backing to the vibration sensor. Place the vibration sensor, adhesive side facing away from you on the window glass near a corner. Run the cable from the sensor to the wireless transmitter. Plug the jack at the end of the cable into the input socket on the transmitter.

    • 2

Open the transmitter's battery compartment lid and insert batteries into the battery compartment. Close the lid.

    • 3

Place the back of the transmitter on the wall, beneath the windowsill. Mount the transmitter to the wall using wood screws and a Phillips screwdriver. Repeat this entire procedure with all of the windows that are to be protected.

    • 4

Place a vibration sensor on the bottom right edge of the garage door in the same manner as was done on the window. Attach the cable from the vibration sensor to the wireless transmitter in the same manner as that of the window. Insert batteries into the transmitter in the same manner as that of the window.

    • 5

Mount the transmitter to the garage door, next to the sensor, using wood screws and a Phillips screwdriver.

    • 6

Decide on the doors that will be protected by the wireless alarm system, based on those which provide entranceways into the house. Open a door. Remove the paper backing from the sensor switch. Place the adhesive side of the sensor switch against the bottom edge of the door. Remove the paper backing from the sensor plate. Place the adhesive side of the sensor plate against the bottom edge of the door frame, opposite the switch.

    • 7

Run the cable from the sensor switch to the wireless transmitter. Plug the jack at the end of the cable into the input socket on the transmitter. Insert batteries and mount the transmitter to the baseboard of the wall, next to the door frame, in the same manner as was done with the windows. Close the door. Repeat this entire procedure with all of the doors that are to be protected.

    • 8

Place the wireless alarm receiver on a night table in your bedroom so you can be warned during the night, while you are asleep. Plug the receiver's power cord into a wall outlet for power.

    • 9

Press the "Sync" or similarly named button on the receiver. Press the the "Sync" or similarly named buttons on all of the transmitters to sync them to the receiver -- have a second person help by pressing the button on the transmitter in the garage so that you don't have to run to get to it.

    • 10

Rotate the alarm knob on the receiver fully clockwise so that the alarm will sound out as loud as it can. Enter a password into the receiver and configure the settings so that they are acceptable to you and that there is a delay of 30 seconds before the alarm sounds so you can disarm the system upon entering the house. Enter the password again to arm the system.
