How to Make a Desk Attached to the Wall

Attaching a desk to your wall provides additional support and stability to the desk when you use it. Designing and creating a custom-made desk for your wall space is possible with the proper tools and supplies. In addition, a wall-mounted desk must have additional support in the form of desk legs to ensure the desk does not cause wall damage when you add weight to the desk surface. Collect all of the required tools and supplies before starting the preparation and building process to ensure you can finish the project in a few hours.

Instructions

    • 1

Use the measuring tape to measure the desired width and length of the wall-mounted desk. Place the measuring tape horizontally across the wall to get the length and place the measuring tape outward from the wall to measure the width. Write the length and width figures down.

    • 2

Draw the desk surface on the plywood sheet with a pencil using the length and width measurement to get a custom-sized desk. Use a ruler to make the lines straight and corners even. Turn on the table saw and make the cuts required to get your custom-sized desk. Sand the edges, so splinters are eliminated. When done, paint or stain the desk with your chosen color by applying the color in an even manner. Use a paintbrush to complete this procedure.

    • 3

Turn on the wall stud finder and drag it across the wall, where you wish to install the wall-mounted desk. The desk requires support, so it must be attached to wall studs. Find a set of wall studs, so the support is even for the entire desk. Make two marks to indicate the two wall studs’ locations. Wall studs run vertically in the wall.

    • 4

Place one of the two shelving brackets on the wall, so the installation holes in the bracket line up with the wall stud in the wall. The top of the bracket must be exactly 30 inches from the ground to suit the desk legs. Use the level to ensure the bracket is hanging in an even vertical line. Mount the bracket to the wall using the cordless screwdriver and the 2-inch screws, so it mounts directly to the wall stud. Repeat this step with the other shelving bracket, so they are mounted evenly apart.

    • 5

Place the two desk legs beside one another, so the top flat ends that will face the bottom of the desk are facing upward. Take one leg and draw an X, so opposite corners are connected. Drill a hole in directly in the middle of the X, creating a hole measuring a 1/2 inch in depth. Insert wood glue into the drill hole. Push one wooden dowel into the hole. Repeat this step for the second table leg.

    • 6

Turn the desk surface upside down. Grab the two table legs and turn them upside down, so the wooden dowels face the bottom side of the desk. Use the pencil to make a mark where you wish to install the legs. The legs must only be on one side of the desk, the lengthy side opposite of the wall side of the desk. Drill two holes in the desk, following the marks made. Do not drill through the wooden surface, but only about a 1/2-inch deep. Fill the holes with wooden glue and insert the legs into the holes, using the wooden dowel as the connector. Apply pressure to the top of the legs and let them dry. Turn the desk right-side up to finish the installation.

Lay the desk on top of the two shelving brackets mounted to the wall. Crawl underneath the desk to connect the desk to the shelving brackets. Screw at least three 1/2-inch long screws through the brackets’ installation holes, so they screw into the desk surface.
