How to Install an AHI Single Deadbolt

AHI is a manufacturer of cabinet knobs, door hardware and deadbolt locks. A single deadbolt lock is keyed on the outside surface of the door but has a thumb turn on the inside surface. This type of lock may be safer than a double deadbolt -- which is keyed on both sides -- in the event of a fire or other emergency that requires a fast exit from the building. Installation of an AHI single deadbolt can be accomplished with tools you may already have.

Things You'll Need

  • Hole saw (optional)
  • Power drill (optional)
  • Hex key wrench (included with AHI deadbolt)
  • Hacksaw (optional)
  • Plastic square
  • Phillips screwdriver

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the diameter of the ring-shaped brass brace of the AHI single deadbolt lock, using a ruler. Compare this measurement with the lock cylinder cut-out on your door. Install a hole saw the same diameter as the brace into a power drill and enlarge the hole, if necessary.

    • 2

Measure the diameter of the latch assembly. Compare this measurement with the latch cut-out on the edge of your door. Install a hole saw the same diameter as the brace into a power drill and enlarge the hole, if necessary.

    • 3

Insert the brass brace into the large cut-out on the face of the door with the flat edges positioned vertically. Insert the latch assembly of the deadbolt into the cut-out on the edge of the door. Do not install the retaining screws in the latch face yet.

    • 4

Insert the hex key wrench -- included with the AHI deadbolt -- into the face plate of the latch assembly in the edge of the door. Turn the wrench counterclockwise until the set screw clears the cylinder bore in the brass brace. Leave the wrench in place.

    • 5

Insert the thumb-turn half of the lock cylinder into the brass brace from the inside surface of the door. Ensure the protruding tailpiece of the cylinder is inserted into the slot in the latch assembly. Remove the thumb-turn assembly if the tailpiece protrudes past the other side of the latch assembly. Saw off the excess length of tailpiece with a hacksaw. Do not install the thumb-turn back into the door yet.

    • 6

Place the square outer lock cylinder collar into place on the outside surface of the door. Insert the collar retaining screws through the mounting holes and into the brass brace. Finger-tighten the screws.

    • 7

Place the wavy spring washer over the outer lock cylinder. Insert the cylinder through the collar and thread it into the brass brace finger-tight. Use a small plastic square and rotate the collar until it is square with the edge of the door. Tighten the retaining screws in the collar with a Phillips screwdriver.

    • 8

Partly insert the key into the outer lock cylinder. Use the key to twist the cylinder until its outer surface is flush with the collar. Ensure the flat edge of the key is facing the bottom. Remove the key.

    • 9

Tighten the hex key wrench on the latch face plate. Continue to leave the wrench in place. Replace the thumb-turn assembly on the inner surface of the door. Secure the assembly finger-tight with the screws provided.

    • 10

Test the lock using the thumb-turn and the key. Ensure the latch face plate and the thumb-turn are square and tighten the screws with a Phillips screwdriver. Remove the hex key wrench. Place the trim plate over the latch face plate and tighten the screws with a Phillips screwdriver.
