Tape the deadbolt template on the door 6 inches above the doorknob. Deadbolt manufacturers provide templates with the installation instructions.
Mark the spots to drill on the face of the door and on the edge of the door with a pencil. The template has these spots on a diagram of the deadbolt.
Drill the hole in the face of the door with an electric hole saw until the drill bit comes through the other side of the door. Move to the other side of the door and drill from that side until the hole saw goes through the door.
Place the spade bit on the electric drill. Place it against the mark on the edge of the door and drill the edge hole.
Insert the deadbolt edge piece into the hole. Hold the piece in place and mark the edges of the piece with a utility knife.
Chisel out the remaining wood around the edge hole using the outline you created with the utility knife.
Screw the metal edge into the door. Screw the deadbolt to the face of the door with the turn lever on the inside and the key mechanism on the outside of the door.
Turn the key in the deadbolt to make sure it works properly. The deadbolt should extend out from the inside of the edge when you turn the key clockwise and go back in when you turn the key in the opposite direction.
Mark the end of the deadbolt with a black marker. Close the door and turn the key to extend the bolt. The deadbolt will leave a mark in the exact shape of the deadbolt on the doorjamb to use as a guide to drill that hole.
Drill the deadbolt shape in the doorjamb with the spade bit. Remove any dust and debris out of the hole with your fingers.
Hold the strike plate in place over the hole. Outline the edge of the strike plate with the utility knife.
Chisel the remaining wood from the doorjamb using the outline you created with the utility knife.
Screw the strike plate in place with the screwdriver and screws provided with the deadbolt.
Close the door, then open and close the deadbolt to test the mechanisms.
