Removing the Vinyl Jamb Liner

Modern windows often use vinyl liners in the jambs, which are the sides of the window frame. The liners contain the tracks which the window glides on when it's opened and closed. If the vinyl jamb liner cracks or breaks, it can prevent you from opening and closing the window. Removing the jamb liner so it can be replaced is a project that you can complete yourself, saving money in the process.

Instructions

    • 1

Unlock the window and lift the bottom portion (the sash) up six inches.

    • 2

Press in on the finger latches that are located on top of the bottom sash, and tilt the sash toward you until it's at a 90-degree angle to the wall.

    • 3

Lift the bottom corners of the sash until they separate from the track, then tilt the sash and remove it from the window frame.

    • 4

Remove the top sash, using the same process.

    • 5

Slide a putty knife in between the vinyl jamb liner and the wood trim stop around the window frame. Pry the jamb liner away from the frame and remove it.
