How to Open a Window

An unlocked window should slide open with relative ease. If it refuses to open, carefully examine the window and diagnose the situation, before attempting to force it open through sheer frustration. This protects both the window and your safety. Follow steps to correct the problem, and the window should open properly in the future.

Instructions

    • 1

Release the one or two locks located on top of the window's bottom sash. Push up on the frame of the bottom sash. If it does not slide up, proceed to Step 2.

    • 2

Examine the window frame for any signs that someone has nailed the window shut. Remove the nails with the claw end of a hammer, if necessary.

    • 3

Cut through any visible paint connecting the sash to the window frame, using a utility knife. Push up on the lower sash.

    • 4

Hold the edge of a wide putty knife at the point between the window sash and frame. Tap the edge of the putty knife with a hammer, working it into the gap between the sash and frame. Repeat this along the entire vertical length of the sash, on both sides. Attempt to open the window again.

Take a pry bar and hammer outside, if the window is on the first floor. Hammer the flat end of the pry bar underneath one corner of the lower window sash, from outside, and push down on one end of the pry bar until the corner lifts about 1/8 inch. Perform this, and Step 6, on the inside, if you are unable to stand and reach the window outside.

Hammer the flat end of the pry bar underneath the opposite corner of the sash. Push down on the pry bar to force the corner up. Alternate the pry bar between corners of the sash, until you can push the window up by hand.
