How to Build a Double-Insulated Glass Window

Heat loss through window openings accounts for as much as 10 to 25 percent of a home’s heating costs, according to the U.S. Department Of Energy. Building a double-insulated glass window provides an added barrier that prevents heat from escaping through window surfaces. A second windowpane can be added during the cold months and removed once warm weather arrives.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the height and width of the window opening with a tape measure to determine the size of glass needed. These measurements can also be used to determine the length of any trim materials needed.

    • 2

Cut the glass, according to the dimensions measured, or have the glass cut, when purchased, at the hardware store.

    • 3

Use a handsaw to cut the lengths of trim pieces needed to fit along the outside of the window opening.

    • 4

Construct a four-sided window frame. Window frame materials come in finished and unfinished styles, including "S" and "SG" models. The "S" model consists of unfinished softwood while the "SG" model has a glazed surface. Use trim nails to attach the frame pieces together. Hold the frame up against the window opening to ensure it’s the right size.

    • 5

Apply caulk around the edge of the window opening. Press the glass against the caulked area and allow the pane to rest inside the window opening.

    • 6

Add caulk along the outside edge of the window pane. Press the window frame against the caulked areas on the pane until the caulk dries and a seal forms.
