How to Buy Window Glass

It sounds like a simple task-just go out and buy some glass to replace the broken window. But you can't just go down to the mega discount store and pick up a pack of glass. Here are some steps to help you find the glass you need to do the job right.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide if you are planning to purchase glass for a single broken pane or an entire window (or even all of the windows in a room).

    • 2

Consider the size, price, type and quality of the glass when making your decision. This will help you to see if the local store has what you really need. It is often best to check with several stores to get just what you want. Some qualities to consider include "Low-E" to block solar energy, laminated glass to help with noise reduction and tempered glass to allow for impact resistance.

    • 3

Check with the nearest glass shop and tell them what you are looking for. Describe the window and give the dimensions of the glass. Take a picture of the glass you are interested in or need to replace so that you can show the retailer what you are looking for when you visit the store.

Surf the Internet if you need something out of the ordinary or custom. Stained and bent glass from the Victorian era are hard to find types of glass.

    • 5

Match the glass to existing window panes if this is a repair.
