How to Connect a Broken Garage Door Chain

Step 1: Gather Your Tools and Supplies

1. Garage door opener remote

2. Safety goggles

3. Tape measure

4. Hacksaw or reciprocating saw

5. Wire cutters

6. Chain link master links (sized to fit your chain)

7. Garage door lubricant

Step 2: Disconnect the Garage Door from the Opener

1. Unplug the garage door opener from the wall outlet.

2. Disengage the trolley from the opener by pulling down and away from the rail.

3. Set the disconnected trolley aside in a safe place.

Step 3: Determine Where You Want to Cut the Broken Chain

1. Measure the chain from the top of the door to the point where it is broken.

2. Cut the unbroken side of the chain about 1 foot short of the measurement you took.

Step 4: Remove the Broken Chain

1. Use wire cutters to cut off the remainder of the broken chain.

Step 5: Connect a New Chain to the Existing Chain

1. Thread a chain link master link through the end of the existing chain.

2. Thread the master link through the end of the new chain.

Step 6: Close and Open the Garage Door

1. Close and then open the garage door to test the new chain.

Step 7: Lubricate the Chain

1. Spray the entire length of the chain with garage door lubricant.
