How to Install Concealed Hinges on Storage Shed Doors

Installing concealed hinges is an excellent way to add a sleek, modern look to your storage shed doors. Unlike traditional butt hinges, which are visible when the door is closed, concealed hinges are hidden away, providing a clean and streamlined appearance.

Follow these steps to install concealed hinges on your shed doors:

1. Gather Tools and Materials:

- Concealed hinges (choose the right size for your door)

- Drill/driver

- Phillips-head screwdriver

- Measuring tape

- Pencil

- Level

- Wood screws

2. Mark Hinge Positions:

- Open the shed door and place one hinge against the inside edge of the door, about 4-6 inches (10-15 cm) from the top and bottom.

- Trace the outline of the hinge on the door with a pencil.

- Repeat this process on the other side of the door.

3. Chisel the Mortise:

- Using a chisel, start chiseling out a mortise (the recess for the hinge) on the door at the marked locations.

- Make the mortise slightly deeper than the thickness of the hinge.

- Use a hammer and chisel to clean out the corners of the mortise and make sure it's clean and square.

4. Install the Hinges:

- Place the hinge into the mortise. Use the provided screws to secure it.

- Check that the hinge is flush with the door surface and is opening and closing smoothly.

- Repeat this process for all the hinges on both doors.

5. Align and Attach Doors:

- Attach the doors back onto the shed frame by placing them on the hinge pins.

- Check the alignment of the doors, ensuring they close and open smoothly, without any gaps.

- Use a level to make sure the doors are plumb and level.

- Use a Phillips-head screwdriver to secure the strike plate and door latch.

6. Test and Adjust:

- Open and close the doors several times to test the functionality of the concealed hinges.

- Make any necessary adjustments to the hinges or the door alignment.

Tips:

- Select hinges that are suitable for outdoor use and are made of durable materials like stainless steel or brass.

- Place the hinges at equal intervals to ensure even weight distribution and smooth operation.

- Be precise in chiseling out the mortises to avoid any gaps around the hinges.

- Tighten the screws securely, but avoid over-tightening.

By following these steps, you can successfully install concealed hinges on your storage shed doors, giving your shed a modern and elegant look.
