Bathroom Wallpaper Removal

Many older homes have one or more rooms where wallpaper is on the walls. When wallpaper is installed within bathrooms, excess humidity and moisture in the air can cause the paper to peel and appear unsightly over time. Wallpaper typically adheres to the walls with the use of a strong adhesive, making removal of the wallpaper time-consuming and labor-intensive. With a lot of patience, proper removal materials and the correct techniques, anyone can update the bathroom and remove old, outdated wallpaper.

Instructions

    • 1

Wear gloves and a face mask to avoid breathing in the harsh and smelly fumes of the vinegar.

    • 2

Pour equal amounts of white vinegar and scalding hot -- but not boiling -- water into a plastic bucket. Incorporate the two ingredients together with a wooden spoon, and pour the mixture into a large, plastic spray bottle.

    • 3

Saturate a section of bathroom wallpaper with the vinegar solution, beginning at the top corner of the room. Limit your work areas into smaller, more manageable 3 feet-by-3 feet sections. Allow the hot vinegar solution to soak into the wallpaper and adhesive for 20 minutes.

    • 4

Spray the area again with the hot vinegar mix to saturate the wallpaper thoroughly. Use a putty knife to begin scraping the wallpaper from the bathroom wall, rewetting the paper as necessary.

    • 5

Move to the next section of wallpaper, using the hot vinegar spray to saturate the paper, and then allowing the mix to soak into the paper for 20 minutes. Scrape the wallpaper off the bathroom wall, keeping the paper wet the entire time. Continue this cycle until you remove all the wallpaper from the bathroom walls.

    • 6

Return to the first section of bathroom wall, where the removal process began, to spray the residual wallpaper adhesive. Wet the remaining adhesive with the hot vinegar solution, and allow it to soak for 20 minutes.

    • 7

Scrape the wallpaper adhesive off the bathroom wall with the putty knife. Continue to spray, soak and scrape the adhesive until the remaining wallpaper adhesive is gone.

    • 8

Dampen a clean sponge with water. Wipe the dampened sponge over the bathroom walls to remove any vinegar residue left behind. Allow the bathroom walls to dry completely before repainting or applying new wallpaper.
