Draw a horizontal line at the base of the wall, up from the floor by ¼ more than the height of a tile (if the tile is six inches high, the line should be 6-1/4 inches up from the floor). Find the middle of the horizontal line and make a vertical line up the wall from floor to ceiling at that point.
Spread thin set onto the wall, under the horizontal line, from end to end, using the notched tiling trowel.
Set a marble tile into the thin set, with the top of the tile lined up with the horizontal line and one side of the tile along the vertical line. Set additional tiles off the first one, working to the sides while staying under the horizontal line. Put spacers between them as you go.
Stop after hanging four or five tiles and even them out with each other, by pressing your straight two-by-four over all the tiles at once and tapping the board with your mallet.
Use a wet saw to cut the marble tiles at the ends of the course, to fit at the side walls.
Repeat the process for each course, building up the wall row by row, starting each row at the middle and moving to the sides. Stop after every four or five tiles and even them out with your board and mallet. Do the whole wall.
Let the thin set dry for 12 hours. Remove the spacers.
Use a grout squeegee to press unsanded grout into the tile spaces, working from the top down. Wipe up the excess grout from the tile face with a damp sponge.
