1. Prepare the wall. Remove any existing trim, wallpaper, or other coverings from the wall. Repair any damage to the wall, and make sure it is smooth and level.
2. Install a moisture barrier. If you are installing the reverse board and batten in a bathroom, laundry room, or other area where moisture is a concern, install a moisture barrier between the wall and the battens. You can use a polyethylene sheet or a liquid-applied moisture barrier.
3. Mark the stud locations. Use a stud finder to mark the locations of the studs in the wall. This will help you to install the battens at the correct spacing.
4. Cut the battens to size. Cut the battens to the desired length. The battens should be long enough to cover the wall from the floor to the ceiling.
5. Attach the battens to the wall. Starting at one corner of the wall, attach the battens to the wall with nails or screws. Space the battens evenly apart, typically 16 inches.
6. Install the backer boards. Cut the backer boards to the desired size. The backer boards should be the same size as the battens, and they should overlap the battens by 1/4 inch. Attach the backer boards to the battens with nails or screws.
7. Install the trim. Install the trim around the perimeter of the wall, around the windows and doors, and around any other openings.
8. Paint the reverse board and batten. Paint the battens, backer boards, and trim the color of your choice.
9. Enjoy your new reverse board and batten wall!
Reverse board and batten is a great way to add style and texture to a room. It is also a relatively easy and inexpensive project to complete.
