Walk through each room of your house and look for mold. Since mold spores require moisture to grow, look specifically at windowsills, ceilings and floors of high-moisture areas, including areas surrounding washing machines and sinks.
Mop up any puddles. Place fans or dehumidifiers in rooms that are particularly heavy with moisture.
Dissolve detergent in a bucket of hot water. Scrub mold off hard surfaces, including ceilings, floors, counter tops and furniture using this mixture. Dry completely using towels. Move items out to dry in the sun if possible. Ensure that items are completely dry before putting them back in a mold and moisture-free room.
If materials are too moldy to clean completely, replace them
Paint affected walls with mold-free paint.
Fix leaky pipes and faucets to prevent dripping.
Check every room for ventilation. Add more vents to ensure airflow. Add insulation if necessary. Open windows periodically to get fresh air circulating in the house.
If a particular area of your house is prone to mold, do not install carpeting. Use tiles instead, which can be cleaned.
Check each room of your house for mold often, at least once every two months.
