How to Connect a B-Vent

A B-vent is only for use in areas that generate low heat such as water heaters and gas furnaces. These types of vents have a specific set of installation requirements that may vary by jurisdiction. It is important that you check local ordinances and requirements for your area. A vent such as this is not suitable for fireplaces, oil generated heat or other similar applications. It is also important that you use the proper materials with this project, as it requires double-walled metal piping.

Instructions

    • 1

Put on the safety equipment including the glasses, respirator and earplugs. Drill the appropriate holes through the walls, ceiling and roof using the drill and hole-saw. The route you take is dependent upon the actual location of the appliance. The best route in an installation such as this is the shortest possible one to the roof.

    • 2

Install the draft vent on the appliance by pressing it into place. Connect the first section of pipe to the draft. Continue running the pipe by connecting one to the next and twisting it in place. Place elbows in the appropriate locations. Note when planning your route that most jurisdictions do not allow 90-degree angle elbows since it tends to trap gases.

    • 3

Continue the installation of the pipe through the wall if the route takes you through it. Be sure to place a fire stop on each side of the wall that the piping goes through. This is important, as it will stop fire from spreading to the outside of the house.

    • 4

Install an attic insulation shield on the fire stop when you take the pipe through the roof. Continue adding vent pipe after the insulation shield. Place a collar, and roof flashing around the vent where it exits the roof. Install a vent cap on the final piece of B vent.

    • 5

Secure the B vent in various locations using the pipe strapping, drywall screws and the drill with a screwdriver bit. The straps should be about 24 inches apart to support it properly.
