How to Repair a Tear in a Rubber Roof

Flat roofs found on many commercial buildings are often covered with rubber roofing material. If installed properly, the rubber roof can last for 20 years or more. Eventually, however, exposure to the element can cause the rubber to tear. It is then important to repair tears in a timely fashion to avoid leaks into the structure below. Repairing a rubber roof is a straightforward procedure.

Instructions

    • 1

Sweep the area with a broom. Let it dry out before attempting the repair.

    • 2

Cut a piece of rubber roofing material large enough to overlap the torn area by a couple of feet in all directions. Use a utility knife to cut the material.

    • 3

Spray the entire area with rubber roofing primer. The primer will help the roofing cement bond with the rubber.

    • 4

Brush on roofing cement to the area that will contain the patch. Ensure that the entire area is completely covered with cement.

    • 5

Lay the rubber patch completely flat on the area and press it down with your hands. Brush roofing cement around the edges of the patch to ensure it is sealed.
