How to Attach Rolled Roofing on Plywood

Rolled roofing goes by a variety of other names including roof felt and mineral surfaced cap sheet. The material comes in large rolls and has either a smooth surface, or a textured surface similar to that of shingles. Rolled roofing is often part of low slope roofs and sheds, and is less expensive that shingles. In addition, the fairly straightforward application technique means that many homeowners can install the material themselves.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a ladder at one end of the roof just under the eaves. Open a tub of roof cement and insert a paint brush into it. Paint a 2-inch wide strip of roof cement along the entire length of the roof.

    • 2

Carry the roll of roofing material to the roof. Place the roll on the roof and position it so that the side edge overhangs the side of the roof by 1/2 inch and the lower edge overhangs the eaves by 1/2 inch.

    • 3

Unroll the roofing material across the roof parallel to the eaves, until reaching the other side of the roof. Cut off the excess using a utility knife and leaving a 1/2-inch overhang.

    • 4

Nail the first row of roofing in place using galvanized roofing nails spaced every 3 inches along all edges. Once the nails are in place, cover each one with additional roofing cement.

    • 5

Measure 2 inches from the top of the first row and snap a chalk line across the length of the row. Spread more roof cement over the area above the line using the paint brush.

    • 6

Move the roll up above the first layer and position it so that the bottom sits on the chalk line and the lower 2 inches sits in the roof cement. Unroll it over the roof in the same manner as you did the first row.

    • 7

Continue this method until you reach the top of the roof. Then climb down the ladder and reposition it on the opposite side of the roof. Perform the same procedure to install the rolled roofing on that side as well.

    • 8

Climb up to the top of the roof where the peak is located. Measure down 6 inches from the peak on both sides and create chalk lines along the length of the roof. Apply more roof cement to the entire area between the lines and the peak of the roof.

Cut a piece of rolled roofing to the same length as the roof but only 12 inches wide using a utility knife. Press it in place overlapping the peak of the roof. Insert galvanized roofing nails every 3 inches along the lower edges and then cover the nail heads with more cement.
