How to Repair a Collapsed Aluminum Shed Roof

An aluminum roof is a good option for sheds because it is strong, lightweight, will not rust and is easy to install. It can be cut to size and attached with ordinary sheet metal screws. Aluminum roofing will last for years and can be repaired when necessary. However, one drawback is that aluminum shed roofs will occasionally collapse under the weight of heavy snowfall. If the damage is minimal, the roof can be repaired and reattached to the structure for a few more years of service.

Instructions

    • 1

Unscrew fasteners that attach the roof to the wall structure. Some of these may already be detached from the collapse of the roof.

    • 2

Remove the roof from the shed, laying it on the ground in an open space near the shed.

    • 3

Hammer out dents and bends in the aluminum material, straightening it as much as possible.

    • 4

Cut out split or cracked areas if they are too damaged to repair.

    • 5

Cut a patch of aluminum for the damaged areas slightly larger than the removed section. Place the patch over the open area and screw into place.

    • 6

Fill the seams around the patch with metal filler. Allow the filler compound to dry thoroughly and sand flat with the rest of the roof surface.

    • 7

Fill any holes in the roof with metal filler and allow the material to dry completely. Sand the area to a flat surface.

    • 8

Apply a self-etching primer suitable for metal over the repaired areas of the roof. Allow the primer to dry.

    • 9

Apply paint over the primer to match the roof surface.

    • 10

Replace and reinforce the wood structures that hold up the roof.

    • 11

Replace the roof into position and screw down securely.

    • 12

Apply roofing cement to the screw holes to prevent leaking.
