How to Repair an S-Style Clay Roof

Also known as “S” tiles, Spanish clay tiles add traditional mission style to homes. Although S-style clay tiles are very durable, damage can occur that requires a repair job. Severe weather conditions, freeze and thaw cycles, poor rainwater drainage and general wear-and-tear are typically responsible for clay tiles developing cracks and holes. Like all damaged roofing materials, S-style clay tiles marred with cracks or holes require immediate patching to prevent water damage within the home.

Instructions

    • 1

Scrub the damaged S-style roof tiles with a wire brush. Fully loosen and eradicate all dirt and debris from the tiles.

    • 2

Put on rubber gloves, full-length attire and safety glasses prior to using plastic roof cement.

    • 3

Spread plastic roof cement over the holes and cracks in the clay roof tiles using a trowel. Apply the cement 1/8-inch-thick, working it into the holes and cracks. Extend the cement 4 inches beyond the cracks and holes.

Cover the 1/8-inch-thick cement bed with polyester reinforcing fabric. Press the fabric into the cement using the trowel.
