Unplug the lamp. Remove the light bulb and lampshade.
Use a sponge to wash the wrought-iron lamp with a water-based soap. Rinse the lamp with wet rags and dry it with a shop towel.
Cover with painter's tape and masking paper all portions of the lamp that are to remain unpainted. Set the lamp on a dropcloth.
Coat the wrought-iron lamp with metal etching spray primer. Apply a light coat to prevent runs. Maintain 8 inches between the wrought iron and the spray nozzle as you apply the primer. Allow the lamp to dry for three hours.
