How to Paint Wrought-Iron Lamps

If you would like to add a colorful finish to a wrought-iron lamp, accomplish your goal by applying paint. Before you get started, condition the lamp to accept its new finish. Wrought-iron lamps are poorly suited for adhesion and will reject new finishes unless properly prepared. Treat the lamp with an acidic primer, formulated to etch metal. Once the lamp is properly conditioned, it will accept paint. Apply a durable enamel capable of withstanding duress, so the new finish does not scratch or peel.

  Unplug the lamp. Remove the light bulb and lampshade.

  Use a sponge to wash the wrought-iron lamp with a water-based soap. Rinse the lamp with wet rags and dry it with a shop towel.

  Cover with painter's tape and masking paper all portions of the lamp that are to remain unpainted. Set the lamp on a dropcloth.

  Coat the wrought-iron lamp with metal etching spray primer. Apply a light coat to prevent runs. Maintain 8 inches between the wrought iron and the spray nozzle as you apply the primer. Allow the lamp to dry for three hours.
