How to Make Your Own Dye

Materials

* Fresh or dried plant material (flowers, leaves, stems, etc.)

* White vinegar

* Water

* A large pot

* A strainer

* A glass jar or bottle

* A funnel

Instructions

1. Prepare the plant material. If using fresh plant material, wash it thoroughly to remove any dirt or debris. If using dried plant material, break it up into small pieces.

2. Add the plant material to the pot. Fill the pot about halfway full with plant material.

3. Add the vinegar and water. Add enough vinegar and water to cover the plant material. The ratio of vinegar to water should be about 1:1.

4. Bring the mixture to a boil. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat. Once the mixture starts to boil, reduce the heat to low and simmer for about 1 hour.

5. Strain the mixture. After 1 hour, strain the mixture through a fine-mesh strainer into a glass jar or bottle.

6. Let the dye cool. Let the dye cool completely before using it.

Using the dye

To use the dye, simply add it to your fabric and let it sit for the desired amount of time. The longer you let the dye sit, the darker the color will be. You can also experiment with different mordants (substances that change the color of the dye) to create different effects.
