Add ½ cup bleach to 1 gallon of water in a bucket. Add 1 tsp. of liquid dishwashing detergent to the solution and stir.
Pour some of the solution into a spray bottle. The larger the bottle, the fewer times you'll have to refill it from the bucket.
Spray the entire fence with the solution and let it sit for at least 15 minutes. This will give the solution time to penetrate the wood.
Scrub the entire surface of the fence with a scrubbing brush. Scrub hard enough to remove the mold growth but be careful not to scratch the surface of the fence.
Rinse the fence with water from a hose.
Let the fence air dry for at least two days until it is completely dry. Do not seal a fence that is even slightly damp.
Paint one side of the fencing slat with mold-resistant sealant. Paint from the top toward the bottom to avoid drips. This sealant will cause the water to bead onto the surface of the fence rather than soak into it. Paint the other side of the fence slat in the same manner.
Paint the sides of the slat, gently pushing the bristles of the brush between the slats if they are closely spaced.
Repeat this process with the rest of the wooden fence slats.
Let the entire fence dry completely.
