How to Make a Canvas Awning

## Tools and Materials

* 10-ounce cotton canvas

* Heavy-duty thread

* Sewing machine

* Scissors

* Measuring tape

* Grommets

* Grommet tool

* 2-inch PVC pipe

* 4-inch PVC end caps

* 1-inch rope

* Carabiner clips

* Level

* Drill

Instructions

1. Measure the area where you want to install the awning. The awning should be at least 2 feet wider than the area you want to cover, and it should extend at least 1 foot beyond the edge of the roof.

2. Cut the canvas to the desired size. Add an extra 2 inches on all sides for hems.

3. Fold the edges of the canvas over 1 inch and press. Stitch the hems in place.

4. Install the grommets along the top edge of the awning, spaced every 12 inches. Use the grommet tool to set the grommets.

5. Cut the PVC pipe to the desired length. The pipe should be at least 2 feet longer than the width of the awning.

6. Insert the PVC pipe into the awning hems at the top and bottom. The pipe should slide through the grommets.

7. Attach the end caps to the PVC pipe.

8. Thread the rope through the grommets at the top of the awning. Tie the rope to the carabiner clips.

9. Attach the carabiner clips to the supports on the roof. Use a level to make sure the awning is installed level.

10. Enjoy your new awning!

Tips

* Choose a canvas that is water-resistant and mildew-resistant.

* Use a heavy-duty thread that is resistant to UV rays.

* If you live in an area with high winds, you can add additional grommets to the awning to help secure it.

* You can also add decorative trim or appliques to the awning to personalize it.
