How to Enclose a Chimney on the Outside of House

Step 1: Prepare the Chimney

Ensure that the chimney is cool to the touch. If it is not, wait for it to cool completely before beginning any work. Next, inspect the chimney for any cracks or damage. If there are any, repair them before proceeding.

Step 2: Lay Out the First Row of Bricks

Starting at the base of the chimney, lay out the first row of bricks in a running bond pattern (alternating the position of the bricks in each row). Use a level to ensure that the first row is perfectly level.

Step 3: Lay Out the Second Row of Bricks

Continue laying out the bricks in a running bond pattern, ensuring that each row is level. Stagger the joints of the bricks in each row so that they do not line up with the joints in the previous row.

Step 4: Continue Building the Chimney Enclosure

Continue building the chimney enclosure by adding successive rows of bricks in the running bond pattern. Use a plumb line (or bob) to ensure that the chimney enclosure is perfectly vertical.

Step 5: Cap the Chimney Enclosure

Once the chimney enclosure reaches the desired height, cap it off with a row of bricks laid flat. This will help to keep water from getting inside the chimney enclosure and causing damage to the chimney.

Step 6: Caulk the Joints

Caulk all of the joints between the bricks in the chimney enclosure to prevent water from seeping in.

Step 7: Paint the Chimney Enclosure (optional)

If desired, paint the chimney enclosure to match the rest of the house.
