How to Refurbish Countertops

A great, inexpensive way to refurbish an old countertop is to install a laminate surface. Laminate surfaces come in a wide variety of colors, grains and materials to make your countertops resemble anything from wood to granite. When installing laminate to refurbish a countertop, you do not have to worry about the extreme weight of installing a stone countertop and the expensive tools required to complete the installation.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a laminate strip that measures slightly wider than the height of your countertop's edge. Use a utility knife or a laminate cutter to cut the laminate. Cut the laminate strip to the exact length of your countertop. Cut an additional strip for each exposed side of our countertop.

    • 2

Apply laminate glue to the back of the laminate strips and to the edges of your countertop with a paintbrush. Allow time for curing. You know the glue is ready when it is dry to the touch. Although dry to the touch, it will stick to itself.

    • 3

Place the end of one strip against the end of the countertop edge. Roll the strip carefully onto the edge of the countertop with the laminate roller. The roller will eliminate air bubbles and ensure a tight bond between the laminate and countertop edge. Repeat this will each edge you must laminate.

    • 4

Place the base plate of your laminate trimmer over the face of the newly installed laminate. Turn on the trimmer and turn the trimmer blade along the top edge and bottom edge of the countertop's edges. This trims the laminate flush with the countertop.

    • 5

Cut a piece of laminate to fit over the top of the countertop. Again, cut the laminate slightly larger in size than the actual countertop. Use the utility knife or a laminate cutter to make the cut.

    • 6

Apply laminate glue to the back of the laminate sheet and onto the top of the countertop. Again, wait until the glue is dry to the touch.

    • 7

Place several evenly spaced wooden rods on top of the countertop and then place the laminate, glued side down on top of the rods.

    • 8

Slide the middle rod out and then press the laminate to the countertop. Use the laminate roller to remove air bubbles. Remove additional rods working outward from the center. As you remove the rods, roll the laminate onto the countertop.

    • 9

Place the base plate of the laminate trimmer on top of the countertop and run the trimmer around the edges of the countertop. This will trim the top of the countertop flush with the sides of the countertop.
