How to Install a Three Knob Tub Faucet

A three-knob tub faucet is a classic shower fixture with a handle for hot, cold and the tub or shower diverter. This fixture installs on the shower plumbing using a special body valve that has three outlets. The middle outlet is for the diverter and the two outlets on each end are for the hot and cold water. Before you install the shower, this valve must be installed on your plumbing by a professional plumber.

Instructions

    • 1

Install the seats inside of the handle pipes on either side of the diverter pipe by inserting the set inside of the pipes and turning them clockwise with a seat wrench. Screw the washer onto the bottom of the stem with a screwdriver and insert the stem into the handle pipe.

    • 2

Attach a bath socket wrench to the ends of the stems and turn the wrench and stem clockwise to tighten it on the handle pipe. Turn until the stem is fully tightened and the wrench will no longer turn.

    • 3

Slide the O-ring and washer over the stem and place the bonnet nut, a round nut, over the stem. Tighten the bonnet by turning it clockwise with a regular hand wrench.

Place the stem's sleeve over the stem, slide the trim discs over the stem and fit the handle onto the end of the stem. Tighten the handle's screw with a screwdriver to hold the handle in place. Caulk the edge of the trim discs with silicone to seal it to the wall.
