How to Replace a BAY28X138A With a Ritetemp

The Weathertron Heat Pump Thermostat model BAY28X138A can be replaced with an updated thermostat such as Ritetemp, or with a functioning unit of the same type, if the original one stops working. The BAY28X138A automatic thermostat has eight wires, which may need to be combined on replacement thermostats with fewer wire terminals.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the circuit board and breaker for your thermostat. Turn off the breaker that supplies power to the thermostat.

    • 2

Remove the BAY28X138A from the wall mounting. This may require the removal of mounting screws first. Pull the unit out slightly from the wall, to expose the wires without disconnecting them from the terminals.

    • 3

Wrap a small piece of masking tape on the end of each wire connected to the back of the Weathertron unit. Mark each piece of masking tape with the terminal name of where the wire was located. The wires should include red for R, brown for T, orange for O, green for Y, black to X2, blue to B and grey to W.

    • 4

Loosen the screws on each terminal. Then remove the wire tips from the terminals.

    • 5

Trim off the frayed or kinked ends of each wire, using wire cutters. Use wire strippers to strip off the wire cover so that 1/8 inch of wire is exposed.

    • 6

Grasp or fold the wires down over the side of the mounting plate, to hold the wires exposed and in position.

    • 7

Set aside the thermostat, and remove the mounting plate from the wall. Reposition the wires as needed.

    • 8

Slide the wires through the mounting plate of the Ritetemp. The wires should be threaded through the back of the plate. Secure the mounting plate to the wall, using the screws provided by the manufacturer.

    • 9

Match the existing wires up with the terminal names on the back of the Ritetemp. Loosen the screw on the first terminal using a counterclockwise motion. Locate the two holes on the terminal, and slide the corresponding wire through both holes. Make sure the exposed wire is in contact with the edges of both holes for a solid circuit. Tighten the screw down against the wires, using a clockwise motion. Repeat this process until each of the terminals on the Ritetemp is connected to the corresponding wire.

    • 10

Bend the ends of any unused wire over, and slide a wire end cap on each one to prevent the exposed wires from touching.

    • 11

Position the Ritetemp in the mount.
