How to Install a Glow Bar on a Furnace

Modern gas furnaces use flat-tip ignitor known as a glow bar for lighting the internal burner. The glow bar draws electricity that sufficiently heats the tip to ignite propane or natural gas. Glow bars have largely replaced pilot lights in furnaces, as a safer alternative to a constantly burning flame inside the appliance. A glow bar eventually wears out. When it does, replace the part yourself in less than an hour.

Instructions

    • 1

Shut off the furnace at the thermostat and the circuit breaker. Wait for the unit to cool.

    • 2

Remove the side cover panel bolts with a nut driver. Locate the glow bar. The tip points toward the gas valve. The glow bar’s back connects to a wiring harness and electrical plug connected to a socket in the furnace.

    • 3

Loosen the small screw holding the glow bar’s center on a curved bracket. Lift the glow bar out of the bracket.

    • 4

Grip the wired plug on the glow bar’s end with pliers and unplug it from the furnace power socket.

    • 5

Connect the plug on the new glow bar’s end to the socket in the same manner as the old part.

    • 6

Slip the glow bar into the mounting bracket, taking care not to touch the tip. Tighten the bracket with the screwdriver.

    • 7

Fasten the cover plate to the side of the furnace with the bolts and nut driver.

    • 8

Restore electrical power at the circuit breaker and turn on the thermostat.
