How to Cover Ceiling Shutters

Ceiling shutters are metal slatted vents that cover ceiling openings designed to promote airflow to and from attic fan systems. The cover slats open and close as air is forced out of the attic. However, when the fan is not in use, especially during the winter months, a draft can occur due to the vents still being slightly open all the time. Shutter covers insulate and prevent the draft. They also reduce heating and cooling expenses by ensuring the temperature-controlled air does not escape through the vent openings.

Instructions

    • 1

Close the shutter if it is not already in the closed position. If an attic fan is currently running, turn the fan off to ensure that the shutter stays shut.

    • 2

Place a ladder under the ceiling shutter you want to cover.

    • 3

Measure the width and height of the shutter. Use the measurement to find the appropriate-sized shutter cover.

    • 4

Position the shutter cover over the shutter so it is fully covered. If the cover comes with a hook, hook it to the shutter.

    • 5

Peel off the backing of the adhesive that comes with the cover. Make sure the ends of the cover are lined up with the edges of the shutter and firmly press down to apply the adhesive.

Repeat these steps for each additional shutter. Slowly unhook and peel off shutter covers when you need to use the fan ventilation system.
