How to Replace a Single Pane of Glass in a Metal Frame

Replacing window panes is always a bit tricky because glass panes are sensitive. The process is even more involved with a window pane in a metal frame because you have to deal with extra components, such as internal clips in the frame. However, if you follow the proper safety procedures, the process is not dangerous and can be completed in a matter of minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • Work gloves
  • Putty knife
  • Steel wool or sandpaper
  • Paintbrush
  • Rust-proof paint
  • Tape measure
  • Metal securing clips, if needed
  • Glazing compound

Instructions

    • 1

Put on your work gloves, and pull any broken pieces of glass out of the metal frame.

    • 2

Insert the tip of your putty knife in the frame, and work your way around, prying out the glazing compound in the frame.

    • 3

Pop the internal clips of the frame out using the tip of your putty knife.

    • 4

Clean the inside of the frame thoroughly using steel wool or sandpaper.

    • 5

Use a paintbrush to apply a layer of rust-proof paint to the metal frame, and allow the paint to dry. The paint will protect the frame.

    • 6

Measure the dimensions of the frame with a tape measure. Purchase a new window pane that is 1/16 to 1/8 inch smaller than the dimensions of the frame. Selecting a slightly smaller pane than the frame will allow for easy installation.

    • 7

Insert the new pane in the frame, ensuring that the metal securing clips snap in place in the frame. When you push the pane into the frame, the springs in the clip will snap in place and secure the sides of the pane. Ensure all clips snap into place. If any of the clips are damaged or rusty, pull them out of the metal frame and replace them with new clips, which are available at hardware supply stores.

Apply a line of glazing compound on the sides of the frame to secure the glass pane. You can use a tube or caulking gun to apply the glazing compound. Allow the glazing compound to dry.
