How to Connect a Propane Tank to a Fixed Outside Regulator

A propane pressure regulator controls the pressure of the propane going to the appliance. It maintains a constant pressure within the gas lines. A gas regulator also adjusts the flow of gas in response to the appliance's demand for gas. Residential propane tank installations generally have two regulators. One is located on the tank and the other one is attached to the building. Changing propane tanks can be made easy when installing quick connect gas hoses. The "pigtail" is permanently attached to the regulator while the longer hose connects to the propane tank. The pigtail is a 9-inch piece of hose. After the quick connect hoses are installed, the ends of the hose snap together. When the quick connects are disconnected, the valve inside the connector automatically shuts off the gas.

Instructions

    • 1

Level a 3 feet-by-3 feet area on the ground where the propane tank will be located, using a shovel. Set the tank in place.

    • 2

Measure the distance between the tank and the regulator to determine the length of hose needed to connect the tank to the regulator.

    • 3

Attach the female end of the pigtail to the regulator, using a wrench. Tighten the connection as tight as possible to prevent the connection from leaking. Attach the female end of the long hose to the propane tank, tightening to prevent leaks.

    • 4

Pull back on the female end of the quick connect end attached it to the tank and slide the male end of the regulator pigtail into the connector. Release the female quick connect end. Pull on the two hoses to check if the connection is secure. Open the valve on the propane tank to turn the gas on to the appliance.
