How to Make Floors Warmer

Hopping out of bed onto a cold floor is one way to welcome the new day, but if you prefer a more subtle approach, warming those floors will do the trick. Unless you intend to install heated floors, the process takes some investigation to determine the cause of your cold floors. The good news is that once you find the culprit, there are several inexpensive ways to warm them.

Instructions

    • 1

Seal cracks around the bottom of doors with weather stripping, or place a draft dodger at the base of the door. A cold draft under the door typically sweeps its way across the floor, leaving it cold and drafty. Stopping the flow of frigid air, leaves your floors warm and comfortable.

    • 2

Insulate unheated spaces under the floor to prevent cold air seeping through cracks in the floor or simply cooling it from below. Install rolled insulation between the gaps in rafters. This prevents cold air from reaching the floor.

    • 3

Seal crawl spaces and cracks in the foundation to prevent cold air from flowing into the home and chilling the floor. Repair the skirting on mobile homes, or bank the house with bales of hay to prevent cold air from entering around the foundation and filtering through crawl spaces.

Cover the floor with carpeting to warm the floor. Choose a carpet with a heavy backing and dense heavy fibers for the best insulation. Add scatter rugs by the bed, near your favorite chair or in front of the bathroom sink to warm the floor further.
