Rubber cement is a very strong adhesive that is often used to mount posters, fix torn paper, and to repair small holes in inflatable items like air mattresses and pool toys. This solution is much more preferable than using a simple patch kit because the sealant will permanently fix the leak whereas the patch is only temporary.
If the hole or puncture in the air mattress is significant, it may be best to replace it or to take it to a professional for repair. However, if the tear is relatively small and the air mattress has sentimental value or other reasons why you want to attempt to repair it, here is how to use rubber cement to fix the hole:
- Rubber cement
- A small paintbrush or popsicle stick
- A thin piece of plastic or a patch (optional)
- A hair dryer
1. Clean the area. Clean both sides of the area around the hole with rubbing alcohol to remove dirt and debris. Let it dry completely. This is important to ensure the rubber cement will form the strongest bond possible.
2. Apply a thin coat of rubber cement around the hole. Use the paintbrush or popsicle stick to spread the rubber cement around the hole, making sure to cover the entire area. If you are using a thin piece of plastic or patch to reinforce the repair, apply a coat of rubber cement to the patch as well.
3. Let the rubber cement dry. Allow the rubber cement to dry for 5 to 10 minutes, or until it is tacky to the touch.
4. Apply a second coat of rubber cement. Apply a second coat of rubber cement to the hole and patch (if using). Make sure to cover the entire area, and overlap the edges of the first coat. Use a hair dryer if needed to help speed up the drying process,
5. Let the repair dry completely. Allow the rubber cement to dry for at least 24 hours before inflating the air bed again. This will ensure the repair is strong and permanent.
Pro tip: If the air bed is being repaired for camping or an overnight stay, it may be best to complete this repair 48-72 hours in advance to ensure a long-lasting fix.
