How to Fix a Cracked Brick on the Outside of a House

Most of the cracks that appear on the outside of your home can be expected. These are due to settling, especially on a brick home, since the façade tends to shift as the house moves. However, this does not mean that all cracks that you find are innocuous. Large cracks or a constellation of numerous cracks in a single area may indicate a serious issue with your home’s structure. Before making any repairs, have a licensed inspector examine the cracks in your brick. Once you have the all-clear, cosmetic repairs are simple.

Instructions

    • 1

Dip a stiff-bristled brush in plain water. Clean the crack thoroughly with the brush. Keep scrubbing until no more small particles fall away from the area.

    • 2

Fill the crack with concrete bonding material, a composite construction filler, using a narrow putty knife. Pack the material into the crack until the top is slightly higher than the brick around it.

    • 3

Let the concrete bonding material dry completely. Feel the patch to ensure that it is hard to the touch. Sand the surface of the patch until it is level with the surrounding brick.
