How to Make Vinyl Mailbox Covers

Revitalize an old mailbox or add decoration to your current mailbox with self-adhesive vinyl available at home supply or craft stores. This low-cost craft lets you be creative with a boring or unattractive mailbox so your home stands out when people drive by. Self-adhesive vinyl will stick to itself; thus, use caution when affixing it to the mailbox to prevent bubbles or wrinkles on the surface.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash the outside surface of the mailbox with mild soap and water and let it dry completely. Wipe the dry surface with an alcohol-based cleaner and let it dry completely before applying vinyl.

    • 2

Measure the curve of the mailbox from the bottom edge of one side and over the curved top to the bottom edge on the opposite side with a fabric or flexible tape measure. Write down the measurement.

    • 3

Measure the length of the mailbox from the front edge to the rear edge and write down that figure.

    • 4

Calculate the top center of the mailbox, using the measurement in Step 1. Measure the location of the flag, going from the center top down to the flag point of attachment. Measure the length attachment of the flag, going from the front edge to the point of attachment of the flag. Write down the measurements.

    • 5

Make a paper template for the vinyl covering, using the previous measurements and calculations. Draw a circle at the flag point of attachment to cut a hole for access. Cut a slit from the bottom edge of the template to the flag access hole so you can slide the vinyl around the flag.

    • 6

Place the paper template over the mailbox, making sure the flag hole is in the correct location and the template fits the size of the mailbox. Adjust the template, if needed.

    • 7

Lay the paper template on the vinyl you are using for the cover. Cut out the vinyl and mailbox access hole to the exact dimensions of the template. Peel the sticky backing off the vinyl and attach it to the mailbox.

    • 8

Open the mailbox door and hold a piece of paper underneath. Trace around the shape of the door. Cut a piece of vinyl, using the traced template. Remove the paper backing and affix the vinyl to the mailbox door.
