How to Make Fun Futon Covers

Protect futon mattresses by making a futon cover out of two bed sheets in a fun print. Bed sheets wear well, are available in many colors and fun prints and create a low cost cover to jazz up a drab or dirty futon mattress. Choose 100 percent cotton sheets for the best results when making the futon cover. Cotton jersey and satin sheets will not work well for this project. A futon cover made out of cotton bed sheets is easy to wash so the futon always looks clean.

Instructions

    • 1

Pull the stitching out of all the hems and unroll the fabric. Wash the sheets in warm water and machine dry to take out any shrinkage that is in the fabric. Lay the sheets on a flat surface.

    • 2

Measure the length, height and width of the futon mattress. Add the height and width measurements together and add 2 inches for the cutting width of the sheet. Mark this measurement on both sheets with a pencil and cut along the line.

    • 3

Add the height and length measurements together and add 4 inches to make a closure. Mark this measurement on both sheets with a pencil and cut along the line. You will now have two pieces cut slightly larger than the measurements of the futon mattress.

    • 4

Fold over 1/4 inch of the fabric to the wrong side on one of the width sides of the first sheet. Press with a hot iron to hold in place. Fold over another 1 inch to make a hem and press to hold in place.

    • 5

Sew close to the lower edge of the 1-inch fold to hold the hem in place. Repeat Step 4 and 5 for the second sheet piece.

    • 6

Cut a piece of hook and eye closure to the length of the width measurement minus 5 inches. Cut this piece into three equal length pieces.

    • 7

Separate the hook and eye strips. Pin the hook strips evenly across the wrong side of the 1-inch hem starting 1 1/4 inches from the edge. Lay the second sheet on top of the first and pin the eye strips onto the right side of the 1-inch hem so they line up with the first sheet.

    • 8

Sew around the hook and eye strips with a straight stitch on a sewing machine to hold them in place.

    • 9

Lay the two sheets together with right sides touching and the closure ends matching. Pin the three other sides together to hold in place. Sew a 1/2 inch seam with a straight stitch. Seam finish with a serge or zig zag stitch to limit fraying.

    • 10

Turn the futon cover with right sides out and poke out the corners with your finger. Slide the cover over the futon mattress and secure by attaching the hook and eye closure.
