Electrical Outlets for Floor Installation

Older homes that have brick walls can present an issue when you plan to install new electrical outlets into a room. One way to prevent chiseling brick and channeling the brick for new outlets is to install the outlet into the floor. Before you install an outlet into the floor, check your local building codes to ensure a floor mounted receptacle box is permissible. Some areas restrict this type of electrical installation.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the electrical mounting box approximately 1 inch away from the wall and then trace the outline of the box onto the floor.

    • 2

Drill a pilot hole into the floor in the corner of the outline and then cut the outline out with reciprocating saw.

    • 3

Place the electrical box into the floor. It will rest on a lip molded into the front of the box. Access the underside of the box under the floor and then secure the box to the floor with the locking tabs mounted onto the box.

    • 4

Turn off the breaker panel for your home.

    • 5

Run a three-wire ROMEX® cable from the breaker panel to the electrical outlet. Run approximately 12 inches of wire up through the strain relief hole in the back of the electrical box. Run approximately 24 inches of cable through a strain relief hole in your breaker panel.

    • 6

Fasten the ROMEX® cable to joists or studs with plastic fasteners. Drive the fasteners in with a hammer.

    • 7

Strip 12 inches of casing off the ROMEX® wire inside the breaker panel and then strip 1 inch of the insulation off the black and white wires.

    • 8

Secure the white wire to the buss bar, the bare wire to the grounding buss bar and the black wire to the breaker.

    • 9

Strip the casing off the ROMEX® wire inside the electrical box and then strip 1 inch off each of the wires.

    • 10

Secure the bare wire to the grounding lug on the GFCI outlet, secure the black wire to the "in" lug on the GFCI outlet and then secure the white wire to the "out" lug on the GFCI outlet.

    • 11

Tuck the wires into the electrical box and then secure the outlet into the box with the supplied screws.

    • 12

Place the cover plate onto the outlet with the supplied screw.
