How to Wire an MPRA6E-147L

Sta-Rite's MPRA6E-147L, a single-speed 1-horsepower centrifugal pump, typically circulates water through a pool's filtration system. The MPRA6E-147L operates on either a 115- or 230-volt electrical circuit and needs a 20-amp circuit breaker. The operating voltage must remain within 10 percent of the MPRA6E-146L's selected voltage. The MPRA6E-147L wires directly to the pool timer, sometimes called a fireman's switch. The pool's circuit breaker sends voltage to the pool timer. Once the pool timer activates, the timer's high-voltage switch closes and voltage flows to the MPRA6E-147L, turning on the pump motor.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the MPRA6E-147L's circuit breaker. The correct circuit breaker usually mounts in the panel box next to the electric meter and uses a "Pool" label. Never trust the pool timer's manual switch to disconnect the electricity to any pool pump motor.

    • 2

Remove the two screws holding the MPRA6E-147L's motor and cover in place, using a Phillips screwdriver. Pull the cover off the end of the motor.

    • 3

Change the MPRA6E-127L's voltage setting switch, if needed. Sta-Rite presets the voltage-setting switch, located on the right side of the motor above the wire terminals, in the 230-volt position. If the circuit breaker sends 115 volts, flip the switch down to the 115-volt setting. A double-pole circuit breaker delivers 230 volts of electricity and a single-pole circuit breaker sends 115 volts.

    • 4

Push the pool timer's wire set into the wire access hole on the MPRA6E-147L's motor housing, located on the right-hand side of the motor's housing.

    • 5

Loosen the MPRA6E-147L's green ground screw, located near the top right-hand side of the motor, using a slotted screwdriver. Wrap the bare copper wire from the pool timer around the ground screw and tighten the ground screw with the slotted screwdriver.

    • 6

Loosen the MPRA6E-147L's wire terminals with the "L1" and "L2" labels, located next to the wire access hole, using the slotted screwdriver.

    • 7

Slide the black-colored wire from the pool timer into the MPRA6E-147L's L1 wire terminal, the bottom wire terminal. Tighten the L1 terminal with the slotted screwdriver. If the MPRA6E-147L operates with a 115-volt power source, the L1 terminal accepts the live wire.

    • 8

Slip the white-colored wire from the pool timer into the MPRA6E-147L's L2 wire terminal, the top wire terminal. Tighten the L2 terminal with the slotted screwdriver. If the MPRA6E-147L operates with a 115-volt power source, the L2 terminal provides the common leg for the electrical circuit. Both L1 and L2 connect to live wires when the MPRA6E-147L operates on 230 volts.

Hold the motor end cover on the pool pump motor and tighten its two screws with the Phillips screwdriver.
