* Flathead screwdriver
* Phillips head screwdriver
* Voltage tester
* Pliers
* New three-way switch (optional)
Instructions:
1. Turn off the power. Before you start working on any electrical wiring, it's crucial to turn off the power to the circuit you'll be working on. You can do this by flipping the circuit breaker or removing the fuse for that circuit. To be sure the power is off, use a voltage tester to check the wires before you touch them.
2. Remove the cover plate. Once the power is turned off, remove the screws holding the cover plate to the wall. The cover plate should then come off easily.
3. Identify the wires. Inside the switch box, you'll see a bundle of wires. Three wires are connected to the three-way switch: a hot wire (black), a neutral wire (white), and a traveler wire (usually red). The traveler wire is the one that connects the two three-way switches.
4. Disconnect the wires. Use a flathead screwdriver to loosen the screws holding the wires to the switch. Once the screws are loose, you can pull the wires off the switch. Be careful not to touch any of the live wires!
5. Remove the old switch. Once the wires are disconnected, remove the screws that hold the old switch to the switch box. The switch should now come out of the box.
6. Install the new switch (if applicable). If you're replacing the old switch with a new one, now's the time to do it. Simply reverse the steps above, connecting the wires to the new switch and securing the switch to the box.
7. Turn on the power and test the switch. Once the new switch is installed, turn the power back on and test the switch to make sure it's working properly.
