How to Tighten a Loose Banister Spindle

If you have a loose banister spindle, you can repair it by inserting wooden wedges or shims around the spindle to tighten it. If your spindle is loose because the wood has rotted out, you'll need to replace the spindle entirely by cutting it from the banister and inserting a new one. Tightening a spindle only requires a few tools and can be completed in an afternoon.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Look at the joint where the spindle meets the banister to get a sense of how much space is between them. This space creates the loose "wiggle room" and must be filled to tighten the spindle.

    • 2

Choose a wooden wedge or shim that will fit snugly in the space between the spindle and banister. Shims are available at any home improvement store.

    • 3

Apply wood glue to both sides of the shim or wedge and drive it into the opening. Carefully tap the shim with a hammer to make sure it's securely in place.

    • 4

Allow the glue to dry completely, and trim down the wedge or shim with a utility knife. Be careful not to damage the spindle wood.
