How to Cut a Bar Rail

A bar rail is the finished edge you see on a bar countertop. Homeowners who choose to install a home wet bar or similar countertop may desire to install a bar rail as it will provide a better look than a straight counter edger. You can also use pre-manufactured curved edges to create a rounded edge for your home bar counter. Bar rails may be either wood or metal. Metal rails may have other purposes for homeowner projects, such as molding or baseboard for creating an improved look on projects.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length of each bar counter edge with a tape measure. You will need to take measurements for each edge where you will install the bar rail.

    • 2

Set the bar rail on two or more sawhorses. Evenly space the sawhorses beneath the bar rail.

    • 3

Transfer your length measurements to the bar rail. Use a speed square to make a straight line.

    • 4

Cut wood bar rails using a handsaw; a jigsaw is an electric tool that will make faster cuts. Use a hacksaw or disc grinder to cut metal bar rails.

    • 5

Sand the cut edge with sandpaper to smooth it out.

    • 6

Dry fit the bar rail in its place to ensure it fits. Repeat step 4 to cut the bar rail again to make it fit in place.
