How to Finish a Fence

Finish a fence with a penetrating, oil-based stain. This creates a layer on the wooden fence that prevents water from soaking too far into the wood, where it causes wood rot, buckling or mold and mildew. This finish also helps protect the fence from ultraviolet sunrays.
