How to Make a Clothing Bar for a Closet

You can make a coat closet or a hanging closet out of nearly any empty cubby or closet in your house. Elaborate closet assemblies are costly, and unnecessary if you simply need a place to hang a few garments. Instead, you can secure a dowel or dowels to the wall to create a single or two-tiered clothing bar. Most home improvement stores will cut the dowel to size for a small fee, so you can complete this project even if you don't have a saw of your own.

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring tape
  • 2-inch dowel
  • Saw
  • Level
  • Dowel brackets
  • Screws
  • Electric drill
  • Drill bits
  • Drywall anchors

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width of the closet precisely.

    • 2

Purchase a 2-inch diameter dowel at least as long as the width of the closet and cut it to the exact width of the closet.

    • 3

Mark a level line along the back closet wall and screw dowel brackets into studs along the line. If there are not enough studs, hold the brackets up to the line and drill holes in the wall the same diameter as the screws. Hammer drywall anchors gently into each hole, then mount the brackets to the anchors.

Install a second rod 36 inches below the first, if desired.
