How to Connect Wheels to a Bed Frame

Bed frames are usually heavy and stay in one position on the floor. However, sometimes moving the bed is necessary for rearranging the room furniture. Attaching wheels to the bed frame lifts the bed only slightly, but makes the bed much easier to move. The carpet and floors sustain no damage since the wheels roll over them as opposed to someone dragging the frame across the floor. The size of the wheels will depend on the weight of the bed, including the person who sleeps there.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the bedding and mattress from the bed frame and set aside. Turn the bed upside down to reveal the bottom feet of the frame. Measure from corner to corner of the leg and mark the center point. If the legs of the frame are rounded, simply measure the diameter and then mark the half point.

    • 2

Drill out the centers of the bed frame legs to facilitate the insertion of the wheel insert plugs. Use the dimensions of the plugs as the guide for your drilling, adding 1/4 inch to the depth. Mark the depth of the plugs on your drill bit with a piece of masking tape.

    • 3

Dip the wheel insert plugs into carpenter’s wood glue and insert into the holes in the legs of the bed frame, tapping them lightly until the plugs are flush with the surface of the foot.

Turn the bed frame back over. Lift each leg and slide the wheel stems into the plug openings. Test the function of the wheels. Roll the bed into position and reassemble the bedding.
