How to Connect the Headboard to the Frame

There is no single way to connect a headboard to a frame. Depending upon your specific bed, the process may be as simple as snapping pieces together or it may require a Phillips head or flat head screwdriver. Regardless of the method required for attaching a headboard to your bed, setting the parts of the bed up properly beforehand can make the job of attaching the frame easier.

Lean the headboard of your bed against a wall, with the inside of the headboard facing the bed frame rails. Lay your bed frame rails in line with the headboard, one on each side as they will be attached. Check to see if your frames will attach to the headboard by slots that snap together or with screws. If your bed came with screws, you will need a screwdriver to fit them before attempting to assemble your bed. Keep the instructions that came with the bed handy if you have them. Screw headboard fitting brackets onto your bed if they aren't already in place. Some beds use brackets and others don't.

Stand on one side of your headboard and lift the rail closest to you. Locate the slot or screw hole where you will need to join the headboard to the frame end. If the headboard has a notch, lift the frame closest to you and fit it into the slot. Hammer it down with the palm of your hand or a rubber mallet to seat it securely. Repeat this with the frame on the other side of the bed. Ensure the frame is fully extended and locked in place, typically by pushing down until you feel the frame snap into place.

If your headboard requires screws and is not slotted, hold the screw and nut in one hand and lift the frame in the other, bringing it flush with the headboard. Hold the nut against the frame, flush against the end touching the headboard. Straighten the bed frame and balance it between your knees to hold it steady as you line up the screw and nut. This will be easier if you have someone to help you, but you can balance the headboard with the same arm you turn the screw with if you can't find a helper. Turn the screw as you hold the nut, just getting it finger tight. Repeat this with the other side of the frame, then return to the first and tighten it with a screwdriver while you hold the nut still with pliers.
