How to Hang Curtains on a Circle Top Half Window

Circle top, arched and unusually shaped windows often puzzle homeowners when they need to cover the window with a curtain. Luckily, curtain rod designers have solutions for these types of windows. The most common solution is a bendable curtain rod that uses brackets to hold the rod to the contour of the window frame. This allows you to exactly match the shape of your window with the curtain. The most common curtain style for curved upper windows is called a sunburst or half sunburst.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the curved part of the window with a cloth tape measure. Alternatively, spread a string around the perimeter of the curve and then flatten the string to measure it with a straight ruler or yard stick.

    • 2

Cut a bendable curtain rod 1 inch smaller than your measurement. Press the end caps onto the rod.

    • 3

Mount the bendable curtain rod brackets along the inside of the window casing. Follow the directions on the package. Most bendable rods snap into the brackets. Space your brackets every 24 inches or evenly with one bracket at each corner. The rod is mounted to the curved portion of the window.

Measure the width of the window. Select a pocket style curtain that is twice that width wide.

    • 5

Slide your curtain onto your curtain rod and adjust the gather to be even. Snap the rod into the brackets. On some models, you may need to make a slit in the back of the curtain pocket at each bracket.

Gather the ends of the fabric toward the bottom center of the half circle window. The bottom edges should be horizontal. Wrap a strong rubber band or hair scrunchy around the fabric to hold it snug. Find the center of the fabric inside the rubber band. Bend the fabric outward to form a rosette. Tuck the ends into the rubber band or use a second rubber band. Adjust the rosette to the appearance you like.
