Unusual Containers for Plants

When you put your plants on display either indoors or outdoors, consider using unusual containers as pots to help create a complete presentation. There are many different items that can be used as plant containers that you may have not even thought of, but once you get your creativity working you should be able to find many unique ways to display your plants.
  1. Musical Instruments

    • Display your plants in an old musical instrument. An acoustic guitar offers a wide internal base for soil and nutrients and an opening for the plant to grow. Cut the guitar neck and line the inside of the guitar with plastic to prevent internal water damage. Some other instruments that may make good planters are trumpets or any wide-mouthed wind instrument, drums and speaker cabinets.

    Mailboxes

    • A mailbox can be used as a planter for indoor or outdoor use. Use the long cylinder style mailboxes and either stand them up, or punch holes around the opening of the mailbox and loop strong twine through the holes to use the mailbox as a hanging planter.

    File Cabinets

    • Open the drawers to varying levels to create a multitiered-planting device. Line the drawers with plastic to prevent water from dripping on to the office rug, or from creating a dangerous water spill on a slick office floor.

    Desk Lamps

    • Remove the desk lamp's light bulb, turn the cone-shaped head upside down, line it with plastic and then place your plant inside. Cut the electrical plug from the lamp so that no one makes the mistake of plugging it in.

    Desktop Computer Case

    • Remove the side panel off a computer case, line the inside with plastic and then place your plants inside. You can leave all of the old parts inside and cover them with the plastic and the dirt, or you can pull them out and use them as decorations in your plant display.
