Though you may be familiar with sand art, this project allows you to decorate your container with sand and use it for storage when you're finished. Draw a design on the outside of the container with grease pencil. Reach inside the container with a bottle of clear school glue and trace part of the design on the inside of the container. Pour one color of sand into the container and shake it around so the sand sticks to the glue. Continue until your design is finished and seal with waterproof glaze.
You can also use glitter for this project.
Collect baby food jars for this project; they're lightweight and hold 10-hour votive candles easily. Wires wrapped around the baby food jars create hooks for hanging. Round metal lampshade rings, rings from wooden barrels and wagon wheels provide a framework for hanging the tiny lanterns. The chandelier should be low enough that you can reach the candles to light them from the floor or from a small step-stool. Battery-powered candles and candles in their own containers prevent mess.
These little jars make thoughtful gifts and freshen the air in your home without the fire hazards and smoke associated with scented candles and incense. You may repurpose a spaghetti jar or pickle jar for these home decorations.
The scents in the jar come from potpourri. You may purchase pre-made mixes or make some at home from cedar chips, dried fruit slices, cinnamon sticks and essential oils. Layer the potpourri aesthetically inside the jar and cap it with a lace doily and some ribbon.
If you or your child wants a low-maintenance pet that won't ruin your décor, adopt one that will enhance it. A salamander, gecko, frog, or fish can thrive in a glass jar terrarium or fish tank. Arrange the proper plants for your chosen pet inside the jar and set it in a windowsill that gets warm and indirect light. Not only will this little home add interest to your décor, it will change constantly as your pet moves around and arranges its environment.
