How to Do Paint Splats on Walls

Paint splatter adds interest and whimsy to the walls in your home. Paint splats will not cover your wall entirely; splatter adds spots of color that sit on the base paint coat of the wall. The splatter technique is easy to create but can be quite messy. Always wear goggles and old clothes, in case some of the splatter ends up on you instead of the intended target.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare the surfaces around the wall for your paint job by laying down a drop cloth on the floor and moving furniture out of the room. Tape off window sills or other areas you don't want to be splattered using painter's tape, which is designed to easily peel away once the project is finished.

    • 2

Dilute the paint with water before you begin splattering. Add water gradually, testing the paint by applying a splatter technique to a piece of paper or cardboard until the paint consistency is the way you want it. Thicker paint will leave darker splatter marks that may be more raised on the wall.

    • 3

Dip a stiff brush into the paint. If you are splattering only a small area on a wall, or trying to get into corners, a toothbrush will also work. Shake off some of the excess paint into the can.

    • 4

Stand 1 or 2 feet from the wall and point the bristles of the brush toward the wall. Run your finger down the bristles. The bristles will bend down and spring up as you release your finger, causing paint to fly toward the wall.

    • 5

Create larger splats of paint by slinging the brush toward the wall, never letting go of the handle, while it is loaded with paint.

    • 6

Allow each color of splatter to dry before you apply the next color, if you are creating a design that uses more than one type of paint.
